Canberra, the beautiful city

The images in this collection were taken during my visits in spring and then in summer. White flowering trees by the Lake Burley Griffin were a delightful sight, and the Reconciliation Place featured unique artworks. Canberra is a place of national politics but also of science, research and art. Many buildings, including those of the Australian National University or the Canberra Airport, are modern and often set among the native vegetation.

Isle of May guillemots

With around 45,000 guillemots (Uria aalge) present during the spring and summer, the Isle of May is an important breeding colony for these large auks. Guillemots, or murres, spend most of their time at sea, only coming ashore to breed. They make no nest, but lay a single egg on the bare rock of cliff faces. Bridled guillemots with a white ring around the eye are a polymorphism that represent about 10% of the population on the Isle.

Suburban Wildlife

Wildlife in the Canberra suburbs. I live across from a pond used to protect the Murrumbidgee from storm water pollution. It proves you don't need to go to exotic locations and sit in hides for days with 600mm lenses to get good wildlife images. I took these shots over 3 weeks on about 7 hourish walks around Stranger pond. These all have wings but other Aussie animals are there too. Some shots were only 100-150 meters from my front door; even the shots of the Egret catching the carp.

Skyfire 2017

Skyfire 2017 is the 29th year for this fireworks event. It is probably the biggest single public event in Canberra. I hadn't been for a few years but this year thought I'd get a better view from one of the cruise boats. (Except they are always moving.) I caught most parts of the 20 minute show.

Eurasian treecreeper

The Eurasian treecreeper (Certhia familiaris) is a small passerine common in woodlands across Europe and Asia. In the British Isles, it prefers broadleaved woodland where it can be seen creeping up tree trunks using its long claws searching for insects in the bark with its long, curved bill. Its upper plumage is brown mottled with black and white, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark, with a white underside and brown trail, which it uses for support as it ascends the tree.
